There are two options to route the power to the track drive motors: Option 1 is two simple cables from the upper structure to the motors - this is the easier option. It has the major disadvantage that after a few rotations of the upper structure in one direction, the cables are twisted and eventually damaged.
For this reason, in our excavators we have used an electric slip ring to pass power between the two sections. This second option is a far more robust and reliable solution. The slip ring comprises of a group of four rings and current is transferred between them using resilient brushes made of copper-beryllium. Thus, the upper structure can be rotated in both directions and you are always assured a good reliable power source to the drive motors.
