El Aérospatiale Gazelle se originó a partir de un requerimiento del ejército francés por un helicóptero utilitario ligero. El diseño atrajo rápidamente el interés británico, lo que lleva a un desarrollo y producción de colaboración con la compañía británica Westland helicópteros.
